The earth is made up of three main layers. At the middle of the earth there is the core. Around the core there is a layer which is partly liquid and this is called the mantle. Then, above the mantle we have the layer that we live on. This is called the crust and it is made up of twelve different sections. It's a little bit like a leather football which has a number of panels that are joined together to make a complete surface.

Unlike a football, however, we twelve sections of the earth's crust are not hare joined together. These sections are called plates and each of them floats on the top of the mantle and moves very slowly. In fact, they are moving right now at about the same speed that your fingernails are growing. As plates move, they sometimes hit other plates. It is when two plates hit each other, that the ground shakes beneath our feet and we have an earthquake.

The movement of these plates doesnt only cause earthquakes. It can also cause volcanoes to erupt. Sometimes, when two plates hit each other, one plate is pushed underneath the other plate and it goes down into the mantle. This can cause liquid in the mantle, called mama, to be pushed upwards and the result is volcanic eruption.

So, why does Indonesian have so many earthquakes and volcanoes? Well, Indonesian is in a part of the world known as the ring of fire. This is because most of Indonesian sits on top of the Australian plate and this collided with both the Pacific plate and the Eurasians plate. Indonesian has seventy-six volcanoes that have erupted nearly 1.200 times. Indonesian has had the second largest number of recent eruptions in Asia, second only to Japan.
