Next, Indian moslem traders began spreading Islam in Indonesia in the eighth and ninth centuries. In the 13 century, the first Islamic states were already established there, known as Samudera Pasai. Soon afterwards, rulers on Java north coast adopted the new creed. The faith gradually spread throughout archipelago, and today Indonesia is the worlds largest Islamic nation.
