A geyser is the result of underground water under the combined conditions of high temperatures and increased pressure beneath the surface of the earth. Since temperature rises approximately 1°F for every sixty feet under the earth’s surface, and pressure increases with depth, the water that seeps down in crack and fissures until it reaches very hot rock in the earth interior becomes heated to temperature in excess of 290 °F. Because of the greater pressure, the water shoots out of the surface in the form f steam and hot water. The result is a geyser. In order to function, then a geyser must have a source of heat, reservoir where water can be stored until the temperature rises to an unstable point, an opening through which the hot water and steam can escape, and underground channels for resupplying water after an eruption.

Favorable conditions for geyser exist in some regions of the world including New Zealand, Iceland, and the Yellowstone National Park area of the United States. The most famous geyser in the world is Old Faithfull in Yellow Park. Old Faithfull erupts almost every hour, rising to a height of 125 to 1790 feet and expelling more than ten thousand gallons during each eruption.

 

How geyser is produced?

                Last holiday, my family and I visited Lembah Pelangi Waterfall in Ngarip District, at Tanggamus Regency, Lampung Province, Indonesia. It was the first time for me to visit such a wonderful place.

                To reach the waterfall location, we should go on foot, after having a three-hour trip on a motorcycle from Bandarlampung, the capital city of Lampung. When we arrived there, I was amazed by the beautiful scenery of the waterfall. The water was so clean and fresh at that time and I could not bear to jump into it immediately. It was quite windy there and all I could see only green, green, and green. Hearing the sound of falling water while swimming made me feel peaceful and relaxed.

                Finally, the day was getting dark and it was time for us to go home. It was such an unforgettable experience for me that I really enjoyed.

My Idol

                Hello my name is Florence. I want to tell you about my idol from which my name is taken from. Her name is Florence Nightingale. She was born in 1820 to a wealthy English family. She decided in her teens to become a nurse, even though her parents disapproved. At that time, most nurses were from poor families and had little or no training. But Nightingale was determined to have her way. In 1850 and 1851, she received training at hospitals in Egypt and Germany.

                In 1853, Nightingale took charge of a hospital in London, England. Here she showed skills as a nurse and an organizer. She had bells put beside patients’ beds. When patients needed a nurse, they rang their bells. Nobody had thought of this idea before.

                Nightingale devoted the rest of her long life to improving public health and educating people about the importance of good hygiene. Britain’s hospitals accepted her ideas, and they became cleaner and healthier places.

                In 1860, Nightingale set up a training school for nurses in London. The “Nightingale nurses,” s its graduates were called, helped spread Nightingale’s ideas around the world Nightingale died in 1910 at the age of 90.
